STOUGHTON, Wis. (November 28, 2023) – Emmi Roth, an industry-leading cheesemaker, has officially opened its doors at the company’s new headquarters in Stoughton, Wisconsin. The new 158,000-square-foot building also houses Emmi Roth’s new state-of-the-art conversion facility, which will cup, bag, wedge, shred, and crumble the company’s cheese products for a variety of leading brands.

In 2021, Emmi Roth acquired the Athenos business, including the No. 1 feta brand in America, strengthening the company’s long-standing dedication to the specialty cheese industry. With the acquisition came the need for more conversion and distribution capabilities.

“After several years of planning and construction, we are happy to finally be up and running at our new home in Stoughton,” said Tim Omer, president of Emmi Roth. “Our team has worked tirelessly over the past two years to make this dream a reality, which will significantly impact our business and our ability to better serve our customers.”

The facility enables Emmi Roth to control more of its supply chain and improves the U.S. cheese industry’s overall conversion landscape.

“With conversion now within our supply chain the new facility will drive for growth opportunities to our great portfolio of cheeses, strengthen our value add to customers, and increase our ability to service customers,” said Jordan Ehlen, Director of Manufacturing at Emmi Roth.

It has also become the single biggest sustainability project in Emmi Roth’s history, allowing for a substantial reduction in the amount of fuel and emissions spent transporting cheeses.

From a sustainability standpoint, the new facility means a:

  • 49% reduction in transportation lanes, with 16 fewer lanes
  • 26% reduction in trips per year, or 1,407 fewer trips
  • 44% reduction in kilometers/fuel/CO2, with 313,000 fewer kilometers, 113,075 fewer liters of fuel, and 402 fewer tons of CO2 emissions

The facility is also all-electric, with no natural gas or propane service, which will help the company meet its NetZero by 2050 goals and reduce its use of fossil fuels.

As the new headquarters location, the site will also be a win for current and future team members. The facility is centrally located between Emmi Roth’s cheese plants in Wisconsin and will allow teams from different areas of the business to collaborate under one roof. Conversion team members will feel the benefits of working in a brand-new facility designed to minimize physical stress from lifting and bending and create the most efficient, effective workflows.

Employees have started arriving, and by February as many as 175 people will be working at the facility built in the robust farming community just outside of Madison. Eighty-five new Emmi Roth employees already have been hired and another 40 will join before February, adding about 125 new jobs to the Stoughton community.

“The startup of the new facility is in full swing,” said Ehlen, Director of Manufacturing at Emmi Roth. “Our team is really engaged and has taken on the challenges of the new facility with great pride and perseverance.”

The only thing more important to us than cheesemaking is supporting our people, so we understand how important it is for our team members to take time off to welcome new children into their families. That’s why we offer 6 weeks of paid parental leave policy for all employees, regardless of gender

For birthing parents, the additional 6 weeks of leave will go into effect following the Short-Term Disability period, allowing for 3 months of time at home with financial support from the company.

Non-birthing parents receive 6 weeks of paid parental leave to use anytime in the first year following birth or adoption.

“We understand the importance for team members to take time off work to welcome and care for a new child,” said Denise Lofquist, VP of Human Resources. “We are a family-oriented company, and we believe parents should have appropriate time to bond with their new child and adjust to their new family situation with less financial pressure.”

FITCHBURG, Wis. [July 27, 2022] – Emmi Roth, an industry-leading cheesemaker, is breaking ground on its new headquarters and cheese conversion facility, located at 1800 Williams Drive in Stoughton, Wisconsin. The site will add conversion capabilities, increase distribution capacity, and add 100 new local jobs. An official groundbreaking ceremony will be held Thursday, August 4.

“This is an exciting chapter in Emmi Roth’s history,” said Tim Omer, president and managing director of Emmi Roth. “Thanks to the tireless efforts of our team, we’re proud to be breaking ground in Stoughton, a vibrant farming community which fits with our steadfast commitment to Wisconsin’s dairy industry.”

The new headquarters in Stoughton will add to existing Emmi Roth locations in Monroe, Platteville, and Seymour, Wisconsin.

Emmi Roth acquired the Athenos business, including the No. 1 feta brand in America, in 2021 strengthening the company’s long-standing dedication to the specialty cheese industry. With the acquisition came the need for more conversion and distribution capabilities.

“The primary purpose of this facility is cheese conversion,” said Jordan Ehlen, Emmi Roth’s director of manufacturing. “Conversion is the process of taking cheeses from their original, larger form, and crumbling, shredding, or portioning them into their end form. Conversion allows us to provide different packaging options to customers and consumers, based on their needs – which may be a cup, bag, chunk, wedge, or other forms.”

“This facility ultimately allows us to be agile so that we can quickly react to changes and get our new cheese innovations to market faster,” adds Ehlen.

The 158,000-square-foot facility will also become Emmi Roth’s new U.S. headquarters. Its current corporate office in Fitchburg, Wisconsin, will remain operational until the building project is complete – estimated by the end of 2023.

Wisconsin –In honor of National Dairy Month in June, Wisconsin-based cheesemaker Emmi Roth donated $5,000 to the Adopt-a-Dairy-Cow program in support of Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin. Joining the ongoing fight to end food insecurity in Southern Wisconsin, Emmi Roth’s contribution will help provide a rarely donated, nutrient-rich product to those in need: milk.

“The Adopt-a-Dairy-Cow program is an annual tradition that directly helps locals when they need it the most,” said Angie Frie, a founding member of Emmi Roth’s Giving & Caring Committee. “As impactful community outreach continues to play a major role in our overall business goals, we are proud to do our part by supporting Second Harvest Foodbank of Southern Wisconsin and organizations like it.”

Running through the end of June, the program allows people to “adopt” a cow for any chosen duration and pay for the milk that cow produces in that time. Second Harvest Foodbank then uses that money exclusively on dairy products. This year’s roster of cows includes bovine beauties Shimmer, Flora, Starla, Trixie, Remi and Violet.

Since its first year, the Adopt-a-Dairy-Cow campaign has provided struggling Wisconsin residents with more than 180,000 gallons of milk. Though impressive, this averages to less than 20 ounces of milk per person, making donations from organizations and community groups increasingly important. Emmi Roth’s contribution will provide up to 2,500 gallons of milk.

Reaching their overall goal of raising $70,000 in just a matter of weeks, Second Harvest has set their site on a new dream: raising another $30,000 (a total of $100,000) by the end of June.
