Fitchburg, Wisconsin – To tell a deeper story about the origin and tradition of authentic cheeses from Switzerland, Emmi USA has introduced new packaging for their core products.

The company’s imported Le Gruyère AOP, Emmentaler AOP, Appenzeller and Tête de Moine cheeses can now be found with updated labels to tell a deeper story about where they are made. Each cheese label is uniquely designed with the symbols that relate to its cheesemaking region through Scherenschnitte, the traditional art of Swiss paper cutting. This folk art emerged in Switzerland in the 1800’s and remains a tradition today. The company says the inspiration of Scherenschnitte also symbolizes the art, craft, and skill that is part of the cheesemaking culture at Emmi.

“We know through research that consumers appreciate the tradition of Swiss cheesemaking, but not many know the stories behind the cheeses they buy,” said Heather Engwall, Vice President of Marketing for Emmi Roth, the parent company for the Emmi USA brand. “The new packaging for some of our most popular Emmi products will help us tell those stories on shelf and make consumers confident they are buying some of the best cheeses in the world.”

The new packaging also includes added non-GMO and lactose-free call-outs, as well as pairing and recipe ideas.

Emmi has the top exact-weight Gruyère product in the country, which continues to see impressive growth with 11 percent dollar growth in 2019. This is no surprise since combined, all of the Emmi Gruyère products continue to outpace total specialty cheese growth by seven to one.

Emmi Le Gruyère AOP is available in 8-ounce, 6-ounce and 5.3-ounce exact weight portions. Emmi Emmentaler AOP is available in 6-ounce and 5.3-ounce exact weight options. Appenzeller, Tête de Moine, Le Gruyère AOP and Emmentaler AOP are also sold in wheels and foodservice formats.

PLATTEVILLE, Wisconsin – Emmi Roth, a leading producer of specialty cheese, announced the completion a solar panel installation at their Platteville, Wisconsin, plant. Initiated by a new sustainability goal, Emmi Roth implemented 1,602 JA 330 watt panels on the roof of their cheese production facility.

The installation, managed by Eagle Point Solar out of Dubuque, Iowa, will reduce the company’s carbon footprint by eliminating 14,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions from the environment – equal to saving 1.4 million gallons of gas, recycling 43, 000 tons of waste or reducing coal usage by 13 million pounds.

“There are many companies trying to live up to sustainability goals,” said Jim Pullen, General Manager at Eagle Point Solar. “Emmi Roth is part of a group that actually makes these goals a reality and invests in the environment.”

The solar panels will supply 15 percent of the annual electric use of the cheese making plant.

“We want to have the lowest possible carbon footprint we could have in the industry,” said Tim Omer, president and managing director at Emmi Roth. “This is another step in our commitment to focus on sustainable initiatives, so it’s very exciting for all of us here at Emmi Roth.”

The company also recently invested in a new anaerobic digester at the same location in Platteville, Wisconsin, in an effort to lower operational costs and remain environmentally responsible for the waste being produced during their cheesemaking operations. Their investment in the anaerobic technology will also allow them to utilize biogas as a source of energy in the future.
